Tips when using a scraper to clean your oven
Using a scraper can be a handy way to clean certain surfaces of your oven, and Kristof always uses a scraper when providing our professional oven cleaning service in Newcastle and the Central Coast. However, if you want to try using a scraper to clean your oven yourself, there are some tips to make sure you don’t damage or scratch the glass.
Firstly, it’s important to buy a good blade holder as the cheaper ones break easily and you can hurt yourself if, for example, the top end of the blade holder comes loose. It’s also important to buy high-end blades, as the edge of cheaper ones get damaged more quickly and this creates scratches, especially on glass surfaces. You should always use pliers to put the blade into the holder safely.
Secondly, it’s important to use a new blade every time, especially on glass surfaces – like the glass on the oven door. If you clean surfaces you’re not certain about, like with some barbecues it might be hard to determine what material is hidden underneath a layer of grease, start on a little corner and make sure you aren’t scratching the surface.
Thirdly, always scrape in one direction, horizontally, as this reduces the risk of “micro-cuts”. If you only work in one direction and you were to make tiny scratches, invisible to the eye sometimes, they would run parallel to each other. If you then cross them in the other direction you would deepen and widen the scratch and increase the risk of an imploding glass door.
It takes experience to know which oven and stovetop surfaces can be cleaned with a scraper blade. The rule of thumb Kristof uses himself is to start with the least invasive tool when he’s not certain about the surface. For example after spraying the surface wipe it with paper towel. If there’s still grease left use a soft (green) scour. If this still doesn’t do the trick you might use steel wool or the scraper.
